Gunnar was the senior governor under High Priest Justine, but was secretly working with Marcus as a spy in Quill. In Artimé, he would use magic to appear as a huge gray wolf. Later, he became high priest, attempting to make Quill a better place. He was an ally to Artimé, and was the father of Lani and Henry.

Personality

Gunnar wants to do what's right, and is very good at hiding his true emotions. He was able to live in Quill and show no emotion for a large chunk of his life, and was good at keeping secrets. He worked as a double agent between Quill and Artimé for years. He even got his children declared Unwanted early so that they would have a better life in Artimé. As high priest, Gunnar is very focused on restructuring Quill into a better place, but is ultimately unsuccessful in making much change.

Appearance

As a human, Haluki is a small[1][2] (about the same height as an eleven-year-old Henry[3]) gray-haired[1][2][4] man with steel-blue eyes.[5]

Using the magic charm, Gunnar looks like an enormous gray wolf[6][7] with kind blue eyes.[6][7][8]

History

Gunnar's origins are unknown, but he lived in Quill for a long time, becoming one of Justine's trusted governors. He and Marcus were good friends, both wanting to believe in Justine's vision, but both agreed that it wasn't good. When Marcus became the Death Farmer and built Artimé, Gunnar was the only person he would talk to about it. The two kept this secret for years, and built tubes in Artimé and Gunnar's offices to keep in touch.[9]

After Artimé was built, Gunnar was given a wolf charm to keep an eye on some of the Unwanteds.

During one of the Purge days in the past, Gunnar had taken his daughter Lani to the Quillitary grounds and taught her how to fire a gun. The two also kept this a secret.

Quotes

"There is a natural path to success, Aaron. But you're too angry and bitter to follow it. You just flail around stubbornly in the brush alongside it, angry with the world for not making the path exactly where you wish to walk."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Silence, "In the Middle of the Night" (343)

Abilities/Weaknesses

Using a charm given to him by Marcus, Gunnar is able to transform into a huge gray wolf. He uses this form when visiting Artimé early on in the series, and especially when visiting the jungle.

Trivia

  • While Justine, Gondoleery, and Aaron are both referred to as their first names when they're high priest (High Priest Justine, High Priest Gondoleery Rattrapp, and High Priest Aaron Stowe), Gunnar is only ever referred to as "Haluki" or "High Priest Haluki" in Quill. Even Justine refers to him as just "Haluki" in the first book.[10][11]
    • In his wolf form, he is referred to simply as "Gunnar."
  • He has a blackboard in Quill after the nation is rebuilt.[12]
