SPOILER WARNING!
This article contains heavy discussion of plot details from the newest Unwanteds Quests books. You are at risk of major spoilers if you haven't read up to the newest installment in the series. Be careful!

Sky is a girl from Warbler Island. She washed ashore in Artimé with her brother, Crow.

Personality

Sky is brave, kind, intelligent, and determined. She is scared and shy when she first wakes up in Artimé, but grows extremely confident as the series goes on. She's the group therapist, especially to Alex. She can easily block out her emotions and focus on the more important factors she is dealing with, but can sometimes appear cold and distant. She follows her head instead of heart, and is constantly thinking things through. Sky cares deeply about those around her. Despite insisting she's not creative, Sky is good at thinking of solutions to problems, and is quite theatrical when she can't speak.

Alex describes her as creative.[1] Florence says that she's smart and thinks well on her feet.[2] Fifer says that she's steady and calming during a crisis.[3]

Due to her lack of magical knowledge, she's able to think outside the rules of what magic can do, like with the hurricane chant.

Appearance

Sky has long[4][5] auburn hair[6] that is often bleached by the sun[7], with natural highlights running through it.[4][5][6] She has light brown skin[8][7][9][5][10][6] and plump lips.[8][11] She has very thoroughly described orange eyes[12][13][14][8][11][5], like everyone else from Warbler. She also has scars around her neck from the thornament weaved through her skin. Her face is very expressive.[15] When Kaylee is trying to guess her ancestry, she guesses that Sky had South American or Mexican ancestors.[16] She looks a lot like her mother, Copper.[17]

After Island of Graves, she has long scratches on her back from a saber-toothed gorilla. In Quests, she has freckles.[6]

"At least they looked somewhat human, but if pressed, one might have to admit to being unsure. A boy of ten or eleven, perhaps, and a girl a few years older...Their skin was badly sunburned, and they had very little more than that covering their bones. But the most ominous feature was this: Each wore...a thick band made of metal thorns that weaved in and out of the skin around their necks."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Silence, "Visitors" (186)
"...stared at the girl with her parched lips and burned, peeling skin, the choker so embedded into her neck that it seemed part of her."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Silence, "Visitors" (186)
"But there was no way she could look comfortable with that necklace of metal thorns."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Silence, "Awake" (231)
"The girl’s irises were a deep golden orange, like a marigold thrust into the sunset..."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Silence, "Awake" (231)
"...her glittering eyes piercing into his, the necklace of thorns moving almost fluidly with the turn of her head."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Silence, "Awake" (231)
"Her strange golden-orange eyes reminded him of the way the sun set over the silent Warbler Island and shimmered on the water."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Silence, "A New Day" (353)
"Her plump lips, her light brown skin, and those deep, golden sunset-colored eyes."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Fire, "For a Brief Moment" (183)
"Alex stared at her, her pretty eyes, her smooth brown skin, her hair that was bleached by the sun..."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Fire, "Destination: Unknown" (252)
"She wore a burnt-orange gown covered in multicolored sequins. Attached to a stick in her other hand was her mask—a butterfly shape with plumes of orange and purple feathers...Her hair looked glossy and smoother than usual, somehow enhancing the dark under layer of her hair and the bright natural highlights that had grown even more distinct after so much swimming and training. It jetted down to rest below her collarbone."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Fire, "Masquerade" (431)
"Her bronze cheeks deepened in color."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Legends, "Wrapping Up Loose Ends" (79)
"Alex looked at her, her silky orange eyes catching light from the fire, her hair falling against her cheek, her lips soft and full."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Shipwrecks, "Slowly but Surely" (264)
"Her face was so expressive, and he loved how she delighted in simple, beautiful things."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Shipwrecks, "A Strange Message" (338)
"She had her long hair piled on top of her head, the natural highlights like thin rays of sunlight bursting from a knot there. Her light brown skin drank up the sun, and her orange eyes sparkled..."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Graves, "One of a Kind" (99)
"The sun and sea air filled her brown cheeks with the glow of life."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Graves, "Regrets" (289)
"‘What about my ancestors?’ asked Sky. ‘Mexico or South America,’ Kaylee guessed."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Dragons, "The Dragon's Triangle" (83)
"Sky’s auburn hair was streaked with natural highlights, and it flew wildly in the wind. Her light brown skin was darker than usual and peppered with freckles from spending so much time on the water between Warbler and the Island of Fire."
― The Unwanteds Quests: Dragon Captives, "To the Rescue" (180-181)

History

Sky was born on Warbler. She worked building ships from a young age. After Crow was given his thornament, Sky decided that they needed to leave, and the two of them escaped on a quickly-made raft.

Relationships

Alex Stowe

Sky is Alex's partner in the books. She helped him restore Artimé and the two went on many adventures together. They struggle to communicate and argue a lot, they're really awkward, but they can reliably fight side by side. The two are fine the way things are, and don't plan on getting married.[18]

Crow

Sky and Crow are incredibly close. Before they left Warbler, Sky promised to keep him safe. Crow is very upset when she's said to be missing, and jumps at the opportunity to potentially find her in the volcano system afterwards.

Aaron Stowe

Sky and Aaron are close. After Aaron joins Artimé's side, Sky becomes a person he can lean on. Ishibashi tells Aaron that if he feels he's losing sight of himself, he should seek out Sky.[19] Aaron feels like Sky didn't know him too well when he was evil, and therefore she doesn't judge him based on his past. He thinks she's pretty, although there were never any romantic feelings between the two.

Kaylee Jones

Thisbe Stowe

Sky encounters Thisbe when Thisbe and Rohan escape the catacombs. after camping in a cave together, and discovering Alex's grave, the two got to know each other well. When Thisbe is said to have betrayed Artimé, Sky doesn't think it like of Thisbe, and when The girls' explanation is told, she understands Thisbe's noble intentions.

Fifer Stowe

Although Sky doesn't connect with Fifer as much as Thisbe, she cares deeply for her, and would to anything to protect Alex's sisters.

Other Notable Relationships

Quotes

"Think about it, since you're thinking about regrets. And you should consider this: Maybe you're just looking for something to blame when things are naturally going to go wrong sometimes anyway. Or you're just looking for a way to explain that fact that you're a human who is constantly faced with new dilemmas, and therefore you're going to fail sometimes."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Graves, "Regrets" (290)
"Just because you fail once in a while doesn't make you a failure. It makes you real."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Graves, "Back to the Island" (318)

Abilities/Weaknesses

Sky does not use magic to fight.[20] She uses a sword or dagger[20] instead. She can do some simple spells, though, like seek.

Sky can sew.[21]

Trivia

  • Henry was the first to guess Sky's name.
  • Sky's voice is described as being hoarse as a result of the thornament.
  • Sky isn't really the marrying type, and doesn't want to be thrust into the spotlight. (Plus, marriage in the Seven Islands is less common than in our world, and is too celebratory for Sky.)[18]
  • Her favorite meal is sweet applecorn on toasties with platyprot eggs.[22]
