SPOILER WARNING!
This article contains heavy discussion of plot details from the newest Unwanteds Quests books. You are at risk of major spoilers if you haven't read up to the newest installment in the series. Be careful!

Emma, also known as Queen Eagala, was the main antagonist of the Unwanteds and Unwanteds Quests series. She was the younger sister of Justine and Marcus Today. She was the queen of Warbler Island, and introduced the thornaments, orange eyes, and silence spell to the island. She worked with the pirates to try and take down Artimé, but failed.

She returned in the Unwanteds Quests as the Revinir, attempting to take over Grimere for herself. She became a dragon through drinking dragon bone broth.

Personality

Emma is deathly afraid of being left alone, and is desperate for a friend and genuine human connection. However, she's controlling and doesn't like giving people the option to leave her. Throughout her childhood, all she wanted was to be with her siblings, but they pushed her away and left her behind. All of her achievements throughout her life were to try and be better than them, and to show them that she didn't need them to be successful. She also has a deep fear of water and boats. Emma is not concerned about harming others to get what she wants, and seems addicted to keeping slaves around, and always brands them somehow. She is a disgusting being. She is not pleasant to be around.

Dev says that she likes bossing others around.[2] He also describes her as the most devious creature he has ever known.[3] Thisbe tells her that she's a monster, which she agrees with.[4] Sky describes her as greedy, but actually quite smart.[5]

Hux says that there's a rumor that the Revinir is 99% evil, but that he's never gotten close enough to get an accurate sniff.

Appearance

Emma looks and sounds incredibly similar to her older sister, Justine.[6] She is a stately woman with long silver hair[7][6] and long, curling fingernails that are several inches long.[6][8][9][10] She has pale, wrinkled skin[6][11], and while her eye color is never directly stated, she does not have black eyes like Justine. She is always wearing incredibly rich clothing. There's a golden Warbler pin on her garment.[12]

After taking the dragon bone broth, she has iridescent scales[13] that cover her arms and legs[14][15], that then spread up her chest[16], throat, and onto her face[17]; eventually, she gains wings (separate from her human forearms)[18], spines on her back[19], claws that continually grow[13][20], a dragon-like snout[21][22] and teeth[23][21], an elongated neck[24], and a tail.[13] Fully transformed, she's only about half the size of a normal dragon.[25][26][27][2]

History

Warbler used to be ruled by a royal family, consisting of Marcus, Justine, and Emma's parents. Their mother, the ruler of Warbler, was not native to the Seven Islands, and their father was away at sea.[28] Marcus and Justine left the island at 14 years old to found Quill, leaving a jealous Emma alone. Their parents wouldn't let her go after them.[29] She decided she wanted to do everything she could to make herself look worthy of their attention, and to get revenge on them.

After her mother died, Emma took over as ruler[30] and changed her name to Queen Eagala, because it sounded like eagle.[31] She set out to build the most beautiful boats, thinking she would go traveling around the Seven Islands to look better than her siblings. She had an intense fear of water, though, and never ended up taking them anywhere.[30] She wouldn't let any Warblerans swim. The pirates took an interest in her fantastic boats and the two started trading back and forth: ships and slaves to the pirates, and gold for thornaments for Eagala.[31]

Over the course of time, Eagala moved her people underground. Then she cast a silence spell over the island. That spell didn't mute human voices, though, so she started making and weaving bands of golden thorns into their necks, taking away their abilities to speak. She then started dying people's eyes orange as a way to brand them, saying that they belong to Warbler.[32]

Relationships

Marcus and Justine

As a child, Emma wanted nothing more than to be included in her siblings' friend group. They would often practice magic in the stream with Gondoleery and Eva, and leave Emma behind. Most of the time she desperately wanted to be invited, but there was a time when she wasn't so mad about it.[33]

Thisbe Stowe

Emma can't read Thisbe. She admires that.[34] Thisbe doesn't listen to her and is constantly thinking up ways to deceive Emma, which she finds intriguing. Emma thinks controlling people is too easy and lonely; Thisbe offers a challenge and someone who can be a genuine friend to her. However, Thisbe has been repeatedly abused and controlled by Emma. Despite thinking about teaming up with her, Thisbe is far too good to go through with it.

Abilities/Weaknesses

Emma has bird-related powers. She used to be able to summon thousands of silent ravens, before they were destroyed by Fifer. She doesn't seem to be able to summon them again.

Emma was also able to put a silence spell on all of Warbler, but this was similarly destroyed when Fifer screamed and shattered the raven spell. Alex suggests that her magic is protective or barrier-based, and that she may have enchanted the pirates' shields.[35]

As a dragon, Emma is able to breathe fire.

When she's completely transformed, she is unable to be harmed by anything physically; weapons, spells, etc. don't work on her. Her scales are invulnerable.

Trivia

  • Emma says that her name "Eagala" was based off of the word "eagle," because she thought it sounded brave and bold and powerful. It could also fly over the water without having to touch it, her biggest fear.[31]
  • "Revinir" is likely a reference to the French "revenir," meaning "to come back" or "to return."
  • According to Dragon Curse, Emma was nine when Marcus and Justine left Warbler. The book says this was 60 years ago, placing Emma at 69 during Dragon Curse; however, according to Marcus and Justine being 70 in the first book[36] and 14 when they left Warbler[37], the first book happened 56 years after they left, meaning Emma was 65 in the first book. By this point in the series, 15 years has passed since the first book, placing Emma at about 80 years old, not 69.
