SPOILER WARNING!
This article contains heavy discussion of plot details from the newest Unwanteds Quests books. You are at risk of major spoilers if you haven't read up to the newest installment in the series. Be careful!

Pan was a coiled water dragon and the ruler of the Seven Islands, more specifically the sea around it. She primarily lived in and around the Island of Dragons.

Personality

Pan is distrusting of any newcomers she meets, but gradually gains trust with others the more she interacts with them. She is very secretive and very rarely shares information surrounding herself, her family, or her background. She is also very protective of her children, a trait that is both tied into her secrecy and at odds with it.

Appearance

Pan is a large, incredibly long[1], snakelike[2], black[3] coiled water dragon[4] with an extremely long[5], thin, spiked[1], whip/rope-like tail.[3][2] She can float curled-up on top of the water.[3] Her head is oversized[1][2][6] and she does have ears.[5] She has scales shooting up around her head that look like a plume of feathers[3][2][7] or a mane.[8] She has yellow eyes[9] (yes, with whites[10]) and many rows of sharp teeth.[3] Her legs are stocky[2] and stout[1], with wide, webbed feet and three large claws on each.[5][2] Her scales shimmer many colors in the sunlight[1][2], but are impossible to see at night.[11] At the base of her neck, the scales are worn away.[12]

After Dragon Ghosts, she has large wings.

She's double the size of her children[13][14], who are about an average size for adult dragons[15] (at least, by the time of Quests); she's about the same size as the ghost dragons.[15] She makes even Simber look small.[2]

"Curled up like a snake with four short legs and floating completely on top of the water, the black, shiny creature had a giant, gaping mouth filled with multiple rows of teeth, a regal plume of scales, like feathers, shooting up from the back of its head, and a thin tail that was so long it appeared to have no end...Its tail lifted into the air like a rope lasso..."

Abilities/Weaknesses

Pan is huge in size, meaning she can easily dominate smaller targets. She often uses her ropelike tail as a way to pick things up and fish. She can breathe fire, which can greatly benefit her in battle. She can travel well underwater, being a water dragon, and above ground via flying.

Like other dragons, Pan's scales are invulnerable and protect her from any kind of harm, magical and nonmagical.[16]

Due to her large size, she can be an easy target. Her wings can pose a problem as well, as they can be a target and can break.

Pan says that "dragons can do things one wouldn't expect them to do"[17] after healing Henry Haluki.

She can swim both above and below water.

Trivia

  • It is implied that Pan knows almost everything that happens in the Seven Islands.[18] In fact, it seems like she can see much of the Seven Islands just by climbing up the Island of Dragons.[19]
  • It is implied that Pan was friends with other dragons in Grimere before the split. The books even explicitly say that she'd had "dragon friends who’d come for a few weeks or months" (Dragon Ghosts). She seems to know Gorgrun and Quince.[20]
  • Pan taught her children to speak in "the language of the dragons," a language that is clearly not English.[21][22] However, in Dragon Captives, Shanti says that Thisbe and Fifer are speaking "the language of the dragons," which is clearly meant to be English.
