SPOILER WARNING!
This article contains heavy discussion of plot details from the newest Unwanteds Quests books. You are at risk of major spoilers if you haven't read up to the newest installment in the series. Be careful!

Fifer was one of the main characters of the Unwanteds Quests series, and was the younger sister of Alex and Aaron Stowe, and the twin sister of Thisbe Stowe. Fifer was incredibly magically gifted, being able to call birds and break glass with her voice, and got most spells right on the first try.

Personality

Fifer is much calmer than her sister, Thisbe, but is similarly hot-headed and impulsive. She likes adventure and often takes risks because her magic makes her feel invincible.[1] However, she is more reasonable and doesn't overthink her actions. She hates making mistakes.[2] She hates hurting people. She compares herself to Thisbe a lot and doesn't believe she has much of a chance at anything compared to her twin sister. When left alone to fix the dragon wings, Fifer doesn't know what to do without Thisbe and feels helpless and dumb. Eventually though, Fifer finds her own independent strength. Fifer can be blind to other people's struggles at times, and is a bit of a loner.[3] Everyone thinks she doesn't lie[4], except for Seth and Thisbe.

Simber notes that she has a lot of inner strength and natural leadership skills. He thinks she is calm and collected when it comes to big decisions and risks.[5] Ishibashi says that her compassion is one of her many strengths.[6] Florence says that she's always been good-hearted.[7]

She is said to be more good than evil multiple times[8][9][10], which Thisbe has mixed opinions on; she can sense Fifer's goodness[11], but later says that she must be evil for coming up with the plot to kill the Revinir.

Appearance

Fifer has long[12][13] curly[14][15][12][16][13] dark hair[14][15][16][13] and black eyes.[15][13] She has darker skin than Alex and Aaron.[15][16] When Kaylee is trying to guess Alex's ancestry, she describes him as kind of ambiguous; at first, she suggests southern Europe, like Italy[17], but guesses his mother is from northern Africa or somewhere tropical, like Tahiti.[18] Thisbe and Fifer incredibly similar to their mother.[15][16][13]

After Dragon Captives, Fifer is covered in small scars from the glass breaking and falling all around her.[19]

"Now his mother and father each held a baby girl with dark brown ringlets."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Legends, "Fear Replanted" (289)
"Their features were just as identical as Alex and Aaron’s. The boys resembled their fair-skinned, dark-haired father, but the girls had the sharper features and deeper complexion of their mother. Alex hadn’t noticed it before, but now he couldn’t help but see his mother’s face in the angle of their jaws, the tight spring curls in their dark brown hair, and the most unusual trait—their eyes. Alex had only known one person in all his life with true, jet-black irises, and that was his mother. The girls had inherited those. But while Mrs. Stowe’s eyes had looked tired and dead, the girls’ looked alive and full of mischief."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Graves, "Tiny Personalities" (28-29)
"...maybe your mother’s ancestors are from Tahiti or somewhere tropical. Or northern Africa, like Morocco."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Dragons, "The Dragon's Triangle" (83)
"Fifer nervously smoothed her long black waves away from her face, picking out the remnants of the jungle floor and putting them into her pants pocket."
― The Unwanteds Quests: Dragon Captives, "A Fight" (11-12)
"...her long thin fingers curled naturally in his."
― The Unwanteds Quests: Dragon Bones, "When Everything Shatters" (14)
"To [Alex’s] surprise, she was a few inches taller than his shoulder already."
― The Unwanteds Quests: Dragon Bones, "Finding Common Ground" (294)
"Her striking beauty had been downplayed and her features grayed by the desert land of Quill. But Aaron remembered her face every time he looked at his sisters. They had her eyes, her warm skin tone, her dark brown curls."
― The Unwanteds Quests: Dragon Ghosts, "A Sigh of Relief" (137)
"This soldier wore the handcrafted shoes of an Artiméan mage. The exact shoes Thisbe was wearing. In the exact size."
― The Unwanteds Quests: Dragon Ghosts, "Too Little, Too Late" (423)
"They look more like their mother...They had the same unusual black eyes and black wavy hair. Fifer, who wore her hair long, especially resembled Frieda’s old neighbor..."
― The Unwanteds Quests: Dragon Fire, "Brought to a Boil" (243)
"...her new robe swishing around her ankles."
― The Unwanteds Quests: Dragon Fire, "Restoring" (325)
"Fifer had been seriously injuredーshe still had scars from all the glass cuts."
― The Unwanteds Quests: Dragon Slayers, "The Partnership" (381)

Relationships

Thisbe Stowe

Fifer and Thisbe are twin sisters and are incredibly close. At the beginning of the series, the two are nearly inseparable. They agreed on everything, told each other all their secrets, had great conversations, and schemed together.[20] When separated in Dragon Captives, Fifer seriously struggles, and she is distraught when she goes home and Thisbe doesn't. After that, the two become a lot more passive-aggressive towards each other. Both of them change and gain new, but separate, responsibilities, and it causes tension between them. The two get closer again after the civil war is over, but still go back and forth; especially because Fifer is seen as the "good" twin and Thisbe is seen as the "evil" twin.

Alex Stowe

Alex and Fifer are siblings. Alex struggles with the responsibility of raising his sisters on top of his head mage duties. Fifer is very naturally gifted, and it makes Alex worried for the safety of himself and others. He doesn't fully believe in her, and is upset when she leaves to help the young dragons. He cares about her and wants to protect her, and doesn't let her go on the quest to save Thisbe. He was initially very upset when she showed up in Grimere, but the two ended up genuinely bonding when Alex realized how much he'd pushed her away. The two work well side by side, before Alex is killed. Fifer is incredibly upset over this.

Aaron Stowe

Aaron and Fifer are siblings. While Alex struggled with the responsibility tied to Fifer and Thisbe, Aaron didn't. Aaron was seen as the cooler older brother, and he gets along much better with Fifer than Alex did. Fifer even admits that she loved Aaron more than Alex, since Aaron had always been there for her.[21] Fifer wasn't much of a concern to Aaron, but he is incredibly glad when she's safe in Artimé again.

Seth Holiday

Seth and Fifer are best friends. They're similar, so they get into fights often, but they're closer in the books than Seth and Thisbe. However, the two spend a lot more time together than he does with Thisbe, and seem to genuinely care for each other. Seth seems more worried about Fifer, at least outwardly, while Fifer is worried about losing someone else she's close to.

Dev

Dev and Fifer are very close friends. The two have a rough start to their relationship, but get over it. He saves her life in Dragon Captives, and the two end up becoming friends in Dragon Ghosts (after she beats him up). He teaches her some of the common language. The two become even closer in Dragon Slayers. They even kill some dragons together. Then in the chapter "A Kiss in the Dark" from Dragon Fury, Fifer and Dev share a kiss on the steps. Then even later in the same book, it hints that she and Dev have had children together.

Other Notable Relationships

Maiven Taveer

Maiven is Fifer, Thisbe, and Aaron's grandmother (On Nadia's side). Fifer doesn't have as deep of a connection with Maiven as her twin does, but still cares and spends time with her.

Quotes

"I don't think there's a rule about how to grieve, Thisbe. I just remember something Florence told me once, that all feelings are valid, no matter what they are. Whether they seem appropriate or not, you have a right to feel them. Knowing that has made it easier for me."
― The Unwanteds Quests: Dragon Fire, "Growing Restless" (441-442)
"Don't despair. Remember the fights we've won."
― The Unwanteds Quests: Dragon Fire, "One False Move" (457)
"Then she thought about kissing him. The idea made her gag. Nope. Not a chance."
― The Unwanteds Quests: Dragon Slayers, "Moments of Normalcy" (128)
"We'll figure it out. We always do."
― The Unwanteds Quests: Dragon Slayers, "Time to Go" (136)

Abilities/Weaknesses

Fifer is very talented when it comes to magic. She is able to learn many spells just by seeing someone perform it once.

Fifer can call and talk to birds. As a child, she shatters Queen Eagala's raven spell with a single scream. When she's older, magical falcons all seem to surround her and follow her every command. They are burnt to a crisp in Dragon Slayers.

Fifer has a magical element to her voice. When she screams, she can shatter glass.

Fifer and Thisbe have a telepathic link.[22] It doesn't work if they are at all upset with each other.[23] It works best within speaking distance.[24]

Trivia

  • Alex genuinely considered naming her "Purple" in Island of Graves.[25]
  • Fifer's name comes from the fife she was holding as they were naming her. Ms. Morning suggests the name, saying that "Clearly she's a fifer."[25]
  • She takes steps two at a time[26], like Alex and Marcus did.
